Accelerated Reader (AR)
Our nightly reading assignment is to read at least 20 minutes – they may read independently, with a sibling, or with you but this is critical to their reading growth and their success with AR. Your child will select one book at a time within their current AR reading range. This range is based off our STAR reading assessment and allows students to have success in reading independently while challenging them to improve. Please help your child by monitoring their AR books to ensure they are in the correct range. YOUR CHILD'S AR PROGRESS CAN BE VIEWED IN HIS/HER LEARNING BINDER WHICH IS SENT HOME WEEKLY.
Once your child picks a book, it is expected that he/she read the book completely three times if a picture book and once if a chapter book. Students are expected to take one test each week – it is his/her responsibility to make sure they are on track and have fulfilled AR expectations. These comprehension tests are taken independently in class on the computer and students must earn an 80% to pass the test. When students earn three 100%’s in a row, demonstrating mastery at that level, their range will be raised - it is his/her responsibility to record and monitor their scores and come to me when ready to move up (they take pride in this!).
A printed AR report will be sent home weekly with your child’s Learning Binder. Each quarter we will update our goals and data as a class.
These expectations have been made clear in class and will be a learning process at first. I appreciate your support in making certain your child is doing his/her nightly reading and in talking with them throughout the year about their AR progress. Please feel free to contact me via email at [email protected] if you have any questions.
